Posting items from Turkey

Here's the situation - I'm travelling to Turkey soon. I have a recent (and hopefully temporarily) disabled right hand - can't lift much. I've booked assistance at the airport but, just in case, want to ensure that my cases are as light as possible. I'd thought of buying a rug and perhaps a chess board while there as gifts for friends - here are my questions
1. Would it be horribly expensive to have them shipped to my friend's home?
2. Would there be import taxes, given that the items are gifts?
Hoping someone can help ...
Thanks
