George Foreman grill

Options
Im hoping someone can offer me some advice please. About two weeks ago i bought a george foreman grill from Comet it was on offer originally £70 but was selling £35 since ive bought it i have used it 3 times twice to cook sausages both times the sausages were burnt within 5 mins and my kitchen was filled with smoke. There is no temperature gauge on it so no way of turning it down im not happy about this so contacted Comet today to be told there is nothing i can do about it the only way i could return it was if it hadnt been used. I tried to explain if i hadnt used it i wouldnt have known it cooks too hot but he told me i should have been aware how hot it cooks when i bought it. So now im left with a (almost) brand new grill that i cant use as we prefere our sausages not burnt. Do i have any rights i still have my receipt
Thanks for any advice on offer

How long are you leaving the sausages in for, I get the feeling you are leaving them in too long,
Try cutting them in half lengtwise and cook just for a few minutes, 5 at the most

I have been using these grills for donkeys years, with use you do get used to how long things take to cook
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • Hi i too have had one for years had to buy new one as we used it to the point of it falling apart. After the first time they burnt i thought that it was me so the second time i put them on and stood by it and turned them regularly only cooked them for few mins 5 at max but there was no way of stopping them burning and no way of stopping the smoke when i turned round i could hardly see anything in my kitchen for smoke not only that it then made the whole of my house smell of fried food for hours which the old one never did. This is my problem with it i think they are fab and am missing not using it already. thanks for your speedy reply though.

    1) does the cooking instructions say the temp of the plate?

    2) if you can measure the temparature of the plate you may be able to prove its faulty if its out spec. Though how you test this may not be easy at home.

    3) I have tested grills for a coffee shop chain. We were testing a new grill and we had the product burning far more quickly then usual.
the grill was faulty as the thermostate was not correct when the manufacturer engineered looked at and we got a new one that was checked the next day (but when your spending £1,000,000 you get better service).
The company had ability to test the plate temp.

    4) has a freind got a forarm grill? try the same sausage on ther grill and see what happens.

    5) the sausage may be very fatty. Your sausage may have high fat loss and once its sits of the grill will give off the smoke.

    6) Lack of temp gauge is not the shops fault as you bought it knowing this.

Basically if the plate is at the correct temp to specified I would not give you a refund as its working perfectly.
As for how you can test this at home. I am not sure.

I would suggest to anyone else pay a few quid extra and buy one with a temp gauge. You would not buy a oven with out a adjustable temp gauge.

Or buy a different type of sausage or have rare steak!!!! yum I am getting hungry now.
  • Most sausages use fake skins which have sugar etc. in them so they do burn. These grills are best for steaks and burgers. They are an inside barbeque and great at it.!!!
  • I cook sausages on them with the lid up so it cooks on one side and i have more control. But frankly, your complaint sounds ridiculous, learn to cook.
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

    point 7 to my list

    7) check the lid. Some lids are heavier than other and press down more. To add to 473hudsonj if you tighten/loosen the bolts on the hinge you may be able to reduce the pressure from the lid so the sausages are not as squashed as much reduce the chance of burning rather just having the grill cooked with the lid open.

    8) if the grill is serrated or you cooking the sausage inline or 90 degree to the serrations? You best cooking at a 90 degree angle to them.

    9) if the grill has a non-serrated flat base and lid. erm, not much you can do really as these are not so good for meats etc as they just burn anything more easily. Buy a serrated grill.

I gave my George Foreman grill to my son to take to university with him. We never used it and it took up nearly a whole cupboard.

I think sausages are much better grilled.

The thermostat on the grill could be faulty though and the OP is perhaps entitled to a repair, replacement or refund?
  • Can i firstly say thank you for your replies i have had a foreman grill in the past and never had this problem that is why i posted on here it isnt the fact i cannot cook (but thanks for being rude which quite frankly i feel was completely unnecessary) i will in future try and cook sausages with the lid up even though they are designed to cook with the lid down that was why i was questioning it as my last one cooked sausages lovely with the lid down and didnt fill my kitchen with smoke within minutes they are good quality sausages with hardly any fat coming out of them but once again thanks for the advice offered i will try it next time.
