Not strictly moneysaving - but advice wanted anyway!

Options
I have just started University and am hating my course. I am doing a really academic course without the appropriate A-Levels and I have realised straight away that this is far too hard for me and that I have made a big mistake.

I have decided to try to change courses and do another course as this is what truly interests me and I can safely say I am good at, so after speaking to a careers advisor this evening I spoke to the head of admissions in this department who told me that they had no spaces left. I have come home in a bit of a whirlwind and extremely uncertain about what to do next and I find a voicemail on my phone from the head of admissions saying that she has found my application and they could probably offer me a part time position.

So I guess my question is, how does this change things with student finance? My income was assessed wrong and I am still awaiting the grant part of my payment however I have just received the £1100 odd payment. Would I have to give it all back? Also, I would like to know if anyone has ever done a part time degree through a Uni and would know what sort of workload it is as obviously I would have to start looking at a full time job to support myself.

Any help or advice is welcome!

Part students get very little support. I can't remember the amounts. Yes you will have to give the money back if you don't continue on the course, so don't go spending it. If you drop out entirely the may still charge you for some or all of the year tuition cost.
  • as a part-time student you will also be eligible for council tax payments as you will no longer be exempt.

in the past I have studied both full and part time. I would only ever recommend part time if you have the money to self fund (from savings), or you are working to support yourself
  • Thanks. There is no way this is financially viable for me. I shall have to reconsider things.

  • What course are you leaving and what do you want to change to?

Act fast: ring the admissions tutor for the course you want, and ask about a place for next year.
