advice needed- Student overdraft interest paid whilst still a student

hello I hope someone can give me some advice or has any experience with this situation.

I have a student overdraft account with royal bank of scotland, I opened the overdraft account in 2005 whilst I was at college and although I graduated from that course in 2007, I then went on to do a 4 year degree at University which doesn't end until 2012. Since 2007 I have been charged interest on my overdraft, small amounts at first and I wasn't entirely sure why. Then I realised the bank didn't realise I was still a student, so today when I went in to rectify this and asked if I could receive the interest back and they said no. This seems pretty cruel and unfair, does anyone know if I have any rights to the interest paid or, as they are trying to make out, is this all my fault and I'll just have to deal with it!!!
