No signed contract-can I get my deposit back?

Hello everyone
I would be soooo grateful for any opinions about this.....My Fiance and I were trying to find a venue for our wedding next year. One particular venue co-ordinator (we'll call her WC) pressurised us into paying £500 (on my credit card) to reserve a particular date. I think it's important to say we did not sign a contract and were never given any T and Cs for the venue. Also WC has retained the receipt to put on our file as proof of payment!
So of course we are now trying to find the suppliers to provide all the other little things we need ie venue dressing etc. Now WC is trying to tell us we HAVE to use their chair covers (at twice the going rate) and their DJ (at least twice the going rate)

Forget this a wedding venue, it's a consumer issue. WC is trying to force us into paying over the odds for services we could get elsewhere at better prices. I think as we have never signed a contact or been given T and Cs to read though and agree to or ageed that the deposit is non returnable we should be able to cancel and get our money back, because to be honest I think WC is dishonest and I want to just walk away. Am I right, or is it wishful thinking?
Any opinions gratefully received:beer: Many thanks!!

Hi there, ive heard of loads of venues that try to do this. Unfortunatly most venues T&C's will state that receipt of your deposit is your acceptance of their terms and cnditions. I would however suggest spewaking to trading standards as I know you must be given a copy at the time of agreement so you could maybe get around it this way? Good luck! xx0

Have you actually spoken to them and asked to cancel?0

Thanx for the replies
Yes we have approached WC woman and it now seems the venue has a new owner who must have told her to do some serious backtracking!
But of course with all the upset they have caused not only to us but also to family members who tried to book hotels rooms and were treated appalingly there is NOTHING she could say to restore our faith (thats putting it mildly)
OH has therefore E-mailed the new owner and pointed all this out, so lets hope that will sort it out.
It's worth mentioning we have heard some interesting things about WC and the venue :eek: like the staff not getting paid for months on end ( and things about WC and her encounters with delivery boys. I'm saying no more) and we cannot be the only people who have had trouble as they are being investigated by the council as to whether they are fit to hold a marriage licence (which is at the moment suspended)
Any other advice will be really welcome!Thanks to all posters for your never ending help and support:beer:0 -
Firstly what WC gets up to with the delivery boys is nobody's concern apart from WC / delivery boy / new owner. Neither is the issue of the staff being alledgely unpaid.
As for being rude to family members trying to book a room - what are we talking about here? I know I went to a wedding at a hotel and when I tried to book a room I was told that all bookings were being done through bride and groom...this was done so that they could ensure that certain guests had a room at the hotel.
Did you not read the brochure before you booked? Personally I would have thought it was standard for the hotel to provide the chair covers but what would happen if say you wanted to book a band instead of a disco?
I think you could possible use the excuse that the venue may have its marriage licence revoked and that you are not prepared to take a risk on not being able to get married there but otherwise I think you're clutching at straws.2014 Target;
