Need Line connection and broadband help

hi all,iv recently moved and need a home phone line and broadband.
The property has a phone line but i have no idea on how to check what the number is etc.
Iv been told bt charge etremely high reconnection rates and wondered whats the cheapest company.?
Iv also been told i need to have credit to get a phone line and connection ,is this true to all providers..?
any advice would be much appreciated.

if the phone line works, stick a phone in it and call someone, then ask them to do a 1471 and tell you the number

or if you have a mobile call that and see if the number displays.
or try dialling 17070, it'll be read back to you0 -

There's no way to find out what number you'll have until it's running. It won't necessarily be the same number the line had when it was last used.
As far as I know all companies do a credit check, yes.0 -

I've signed up to Orange Home Broadband but I need to have an active landline so I am trying to find the cheapest option to get the landline connected without having to take out a contract! And I don't want to have to pay £150 with BT to get it installed either!!
I'm all confused!!

Can't Orange be bothered to connect the landline for you? Talk about making the customer do all the work

It costs about £117 with the Post Office with a one month contract.0
