Your daughter may be eligible for ESA, although it is only worth applying if she will get more than you receive in CB and CTC.

Which is usually swallowed up costs due to disability.

The CB/CTC shouldn't be though - their purpose is for a parent to support a child still in education.

We're in Scotland and my middle son is at college and still receives EMA, I would double check that she's not entitled, as we were told that as long as the education was below a certain level then EMA was still payable (at least until December when the Scottish government are reviewing it)

EMA stops when you're 19, whether you're at school or college.

Thanks for feed back everyone, Do normal people at college stil in education not qualify for ctc/cb? I didnt know that if they dont, It still doesnt cover what she needs at college a week/term. It just shocked me that when she left FE her EMA stopped, even though shes now having to go out at 7am to travel to a college miles away as its the only one suitable and theres no help for her.

And as I said earlier, Her DLA covers her respite which she has had to pay for since she became 18, her clothes which she rips, extra bedding, special diets, and she needs some for activities in the week and weekends to keep her occupied, so there is very little left.

College do not help with any funding unfortunatly.

    But thankyou everyone for replying
  • Just a word of advice, to check your entitlement to Child Benefit and CTC, as it's easy to get caught out.

You mention your daughter is 19, and has recently changed to a special needs college.
Was she enrolled on this course, before her 19th birthday??

Child Benefit, and CTC as they are linked, will only run on to their 20th birthday if the young person was enrolled on their course before their 19th birthday. This is to give them the opportunity to finish the course.

My son, also disabled, was caught out with the difficulties with the ALG grant. It's also counted as income for means tested benefits, so it's value depreciates even more.

Disabled or not, if the rules regarding the fact it has to be your first full time level 2 or level 3 qualification, were not there, my son would be quite happy to be at college indefinitely and have £30 a week ALG, and he would never feel the need to get into any employment. His needs are simple, and I'm sure many others would feel the same.

  • Would your daughter get any help with travelling costs for getting to her college? I just wondered is she expected to travel on her own, can she?
no she cant travel on her own she has to go on school transport, buses that ferry her to and from college to our home, she has always had home/school transport

Thanks munchie, yes she had a college placement before her 19th birthday, everything is just so complicated once they get to 18, I cant see my daughter holding down any employment once she leaves college, Im sure she would quite happily stay at a college for as long as she wanted to if it wasnt just a 3 yr course, I cant understand why she and any other disabled young person can not have the same grant as a normal person doing a full time college course.

She cannot travel unsupervised at any time, she has a bus pass to use when she goes out with me or with her respite team or with college but she cannot travel unsupervised
