Water Spill under laptop - repair chances??

Hi

Just spilt some water under my son's laptop - the case was shut so no keys exposed but it was wet on the underside. It's not firing up now.

Any ideas if it can be repaired cheaply?

Thanks :(

  • You will best to remove the battery and charger. Then prop it from tghe edges on some books or something so the majority of the base is in the air and let it dry for several hours. You can also use a hairdryer on it but keep it on it's COOLEST setting. This may be enough to dry any moisture out.
If I have helped in any way, and you feel like it - please press the thanks button

Did you wait until it was dry before switching it on?

You should have waited at least twenty fours hours before even attempting to switch it on.

You can try the hairdryer thing from underneath. Leave it for a day. Do not turn it upside down or try to turn it on again within the next 24 hours. Chances are that you have already shorted something.
Probably now the domain of a reputable computer engineer.

IMMEDIATELY: keep it water exposed side down, get the battery out of it and unplug the power

leave it somewhere to dry and give it a good 24 hours minimum ideally 72hrs before making any attempt to turn on. hot radiators and hairdryers will help a little.

vast majority of the time laptop will be fine especially if exposed to something non-sugary like plain water.

Only thing not to do is make any attempt to power it on while there is any chance of it being wet as then you're into shorting between different voltage parts of the circuit boards, blowing chips and generally doing serious damage to the thing, any attempt to turn it on before its THOROUGHLY dried will rapidly take you into buying a new laptop territory.....

The only problem with this is unless the battery is completely flat, the motherboard will be live.

It may be that the laptop was switched off at the time of the accident.

Thanks, yes it was switched off at the time. Laptop has dried off and thankfully :) it is now working again.

Water damage isn't that bad, I had a computer get rained on without any coverage on the case, the motherboard was effectively submerged while powered on for about 3 hours.

    - No damage, though it did take me a few very worried hours of drying it.
