Peanuts (not salted) - they love 'em.

BTW don't do anything that could harm it as they are a protected species.

It's dormice that are protected not field mice.

(I checked cos I thought the same.)

At the beginning of the year, I lifted off the lid of my compost bin with the intention of turning the compost heap. I don't know which of us was more surprised - me or the mouse dozing inside.

    I slunk off feeling guilty.......

I thought I'd woken her and that she would probably leave in search of a new nest. Fat chance. She was still there in early Spring, leaping about in panic every time I lifted the lid but not budging.

    Cheeky little blighter.

I find it fascinating that there's a whole secret animal world happening out there, often just feet away from our doorsteps which we know nothing about. However, it's good when something unexpected happens which suddenly alerts us to some unexpected wildlife happenings in our garden because it does remind us of the fragility of their environment and how some clumsy or thoughtless clearing up actions on our part can unknowingly destroy their habitat or disrupt their way of life.
