Buying house - must I pay for structural calcs for dodgy chimney up front?

Hi all - I'm in process of buying house and survey threw up unsupported chimney breast issue in loft.
Estate agent says I should get builders round to quote on work and claims to have spoken to structural engineer who had worked on an aborted loft plan in past who said the work would be few hundred quid.
Obviously this isn't official and only have their word for it. I've been trying to get builders to go round and look at loft to quote but they say they can't unless they have structural calculations to work off.
Am I expected to pay for getting these calculations in order to get a quote, so I can then negotiate a discount? Seems a bit unfair.
Advice gratefully received!

If you are wanting to get a discount from the vendor then why are you not engaging your own structural engineer?
If this is a semi or a terraced property there will be Party Wall Act implications, and I would say that you will probably talking in 4 figures for the actual work to be done.
Builders will be loathe to come and quote as the house is not yet yours so there is less real likelihood of their time spent doing so leading to some paid work.
Doozergirl is perhap your best bet for this sort of query - she'll probably show up0 -
You could just look for another house without a dodgy chimney0
