holiday to mainland spain

We (myself, my OH and my son age 3) are planning on going to mainland spain for a holiday.
OH wants a week by a beach, with some life in the resort (ie not up a mountain somewhere)
I dont want to be in the thick of it though - and as I speak speak spanish would probably prefer somewhere where English isnt the main language.I would like to visit the Alahmbra if poss so was thinking of the Costa del Sol or Costa Tropical.
Any suggestions for resorts (I was thinking Nerja) or any recommendations for hotels? It doesnt have to be Costa del Sol though as I could quite easily do the Alhambra on my own at some point.
Also, anyone any ideas about the best time to book ?
Wwe want to go beginning of May - I will use Tesco vouchers to pay for XL flights if I cant get a really cheap flight elsewhere. - is it best to book now or wait a while (Medhotels dont seem to have much availability for May at the moment so I suspect that the hotels have not released availability to this sort of site yet).

I'm very well travelled and have to say that Granada and the Alhambra is a great place to go, you'll enjoy it.
Btw https://www.flymonarch.com fly there from gatwick and https://www.ryanair.com do aswell.
You could fly into Granada and fly home from Malaga or Almeria or some combination.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0 -
Nerja is lovely
cant recommend any hotels though as we always stayed in self catering apartments when we went try asking / looking on https://www.tripadvisor.com or https://www.holidayforums.co.uk
Its far enough away from the really touristy areas but not too far!
we enjoyed a trip to the Sierra Nevada etc,our sons always loved our hols to the Costa Del Sol0 -

Thanks - will definately go at some point, but I suspect this holiday will end up being a doing nothing on a beach holiday. I think a day trip from the coast would not suffice and end up being a long day for a 3.5 yr old.
I had thought about splitting flights - but it could all get complicated if we hire a car for the week (though I think you can hire from one place and return to another.
TBH, easyjet from Luton would be the best flight, but will have to wait for them to release their timetable before I can book. Though I would then be worrying about them cancelling the flight ....0
