Moving from a Car to a Bike - What to do with NCB?

Hi All,

I am changing my car for a motor bike at the end of this month. Not sure what to do with my 10 years car no claims bonus? At a guess I will probably be buying another car in about two years and will no doubt keep the bike at the same time. I am a named driver on my girlfriends car. I don’t know whether to move the NCB to the bike, or leave it but I understand if I leave it for over two years I lose it?

Any advice much appreciated!

Thanks

  • My car NCB isn't valid on my motorcycle insurance, I'm afraid I can't help you with the question about when a NCB expires. I think hastings direct do a joint car and bike policy, maybe they'll be your best option?

You can't automatically use your car insurance for your bike, although a broker might be able to sort something out for you.

NCB is generally valid for 2 years, so you could just park it (keep renewal notices).
A few comapnies accept 3 but you'd be very limited on choice and there is no guarantee they would be competitive, so whilst there is no firm rule, then 2 years is reasonable as that's what most companies do.

I would strongly recommend doing ROSPA or IAM on your bike.
They are charities and the courses they do are extremely worthwhile and very good value for money.
