Non-Traditional Construction

We are cash buyers and last week we viewed a house that ticked all of the boxes - reasonable size, nice area, huge garden.......however, it's a (apx 1930s) timber frame and asbestos construction.

We have owned non-trad build houses in the past and know about the downsides such as how hard / almost impossible it is to sell them on, but these have all been concrete panelled houses. We have no experience at all with timber framed / asbestos construction.

Does anyone know about this type of construction? Should we be concerned about the asbestos? Are we being really stupid to even consider such a property?

i would contact a local surveyor who has been in the business a long time and who knows the area well and ask his advice... and see if you can find out the precise name of the type of build ... then also a whole market mortgage broker if he can get a mortgage for it ... if not.. then dont buy....

Very unsound purchase unless you intend to demolish and build new larger house on plot, which is what has happened to most timber/asbestos properties. Although not the worst type of asbestos from a health point of view, it is not really a suitable building material for houses/bungalows, and the asbestos sheets could be quite brittle by now.

Wouldn't touch such a property with the proverbial barge pole but if you want to research the matter you could talk to the Structural Engineers library people at http://www.istructe.org/knowledge/Pages/default.aspx and/or the BRE. If it's a build type that is specific to your part f the country then the local Council's Building Officer may be able to give some guidance.
