Yes you can. I know a number of people who have gone bankrupt and have continued to work for the Council. I remember some years back being told you cant hold the office of Councillor if you have been bankrupt only to find the actual Chair/Mayor had been very publicly made bankrupt when his business went to the wall and it didnt appear to harm his position.

It depends on your particular council and what department you'll be working in. I've seen people who worked for various council departments without a problem.

  • I am not involved in finance in any way at all. I have been avoiding this for over a year now and finding it difficult to face up to the fact that I need to sort things out before I get people knocking on the door I am just fire fighting with a water pistol at the moment :(

    Hi there

My DH works for our local council and we too were really worried before we went BR if his job would be affected.

He rang HR in confidence and they told him the BR would have no affect on his job whatsoever and he was under no obligation to declare it. They also gave him a number for a care team who could give further advice and information on anything he might be worried about.

It put our minds at rest, we are discharged now and it has never come up as a problem in any way. Good luck with it and try not to worry.

Your call will be in complete confidence and you can remain anonymous if you wish. Im sure you will be fine, there have been no repercussions work wise for my DH :)

  • Well I rang HR they didn't know, they put me through to an employees help section they didn't know!!!! I will try the union tomorrow.
  • Hi,
I work for the Council and I think there is a good chance I could go bankrupt in the next year (house will probably be repo after split up and will wait for shortfall) anyhow I made enquiries with personnel and they said would not even have to declare it.
I was also refered to a employees assistance scheme and they have been very helpful, they also confirmed would not have to declare it as did citizens advice.
It would only be a problem if you manage large budgets.

    Good luck
