Invisalign

I was wondering if anyone has any experience using invisalign? Did the treatment work for you? How long was your treatment course? And (if you don't mind) how much did you pay for the treatment?

I'm seriously considering getting invisalign but I'm weary that I don't know anyone who has used it before so I don't know how effective it is. My mouth is only mildy over crowded, I have a slight overbite and I have a crown at the front of my mouth, does anyone know if this would affect the treatment?

Best people to speak to would be an orthodontist. Every case is different and not every case is amenable to invisalign. The costs would be based on the lab charge to the dentist. I believe they charge the dentist fair amount to make all the trays for you. Its like many things in dentistry, works well when applied appropriately but we can not judge that from a message board unfortunately :(

    Thanks welshdent.

I do have an appointment with an orthodontist, I'm just trying to work out how well this program works in general, I usually like getting recommendations from friends but most of them have never even seen an orthodontist!

Thats understandable. I hear mixed reports about invisalign but as I said it needs to be used appropriately. I think the key is to see an orthodontist and not someone thats done a course ;)
  • I mentioned braces to my dentist and he said it would cost in the region of £3k for Invisalign braces and it would take about a year to show results. I was surprised he didn't recommend yanking a tooth out to help with the overcrowding, which is what I was scared of, and he did sound really positive about the treatment working for me... but £3k? I struggle to justify buying a £9 skirt in the sale, I really can't get my head around the idea of spending £3k on something I want a little, but don't desperately need.

I hope your appointment goes well - if you do have the money, a year or so really isn't that long to wait for a set of teeth you've always wanted. I don't know anyone who's actually gone ahead and got Invisalign, but I rather suspect that's down to the cost, not how good/bad it is.
  • Invisalign charge a flat rate to the dentist for construction of the appliances. This means relatively straightforward cases cost a similar amount to more complex ones.
The alternative company is a UK based one called Clearstep which uses similar techniques (they would say better of course)
They charge according to complexity. The downside is you dont get a fee estimate until they have seen the case models, photos, radiographs etc of your bite which of course means a consultation fee in most cases.
OP asked if the crown was an issue. Probably not but it would need a careful examination 1st. I would be wary of orthodontics if it was a post crown on a small root for example.

Hi jugglebug, the crown is on my very front tooth at the top. it is the original tooth underneath it, i fell and chipped rougly 45% of the tooth off when I was in very early primary school.

Thanks for the information about clearstep, does the fact that they charge depending on complexity mean that they are more likely to get better results on complex cases?

Nope I would say the outcome is entirely due to the diagnosis, treatment plan and modality and the skill of the operator. Clearstep and invisalign are just 2 ways of moving teeth. They would be applied where suitable. The key word is suitable. No one can say what would be best with you without a full examination and discussion of what your aims are. Sorry thats a bit vague but i just dont think its possible in this forum to give you the information you want :(
  • My best friend is having great results with them and her husband is an oral surgeon.
  • I am thinking of going ahead with Invisalign...has anyone heard of a dentist called Sensu in Wimpole st London?? The only reviews online I can find are on their own site!

I would think Wimpole St would be one of the more expensive places to get it done.

Why not go with an orthodontic recommendation from your own dentist? Invisalign isn't rocket science - quite the opposite, it's a bit too simple if anything.

You'd be better off going to a 'normal' specialist orthodontist - recommended and referred by your own dentist - and getting an opinion on what system would be best for your problem.

Rather than going to a place with a swish website and a swanky address who push a particular way of doing something because it's what people 'want' rather than what they 'need'.

The high rent of that address will be paid for by the patients!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
