Hi there - can anyone please recommend their favourite red wine which is fruity and smooth - I am a wuss and only like 'gentle' red wine! Any recommendations appreciated as I may well still change my order based on your experience - I'm a wine 'virgin' ans have mainly stuck to the safety of Blossom Hill to date - a heathen, I know!

    Any thoughts much appreciated...

I'm now worried the Hardy's Merlot won't be as good as the Casillero... any advice? I think I could still change my order if anyone can recommend good fruity reds...

Thanks for any advice you can give.

    Lol!

Hardy's wine is very drinkable so don't worry too much. The regional variety is their cheap and cheerful stuff as far as I'm aware.

If you wanted something different I would have went for one of these:

The first two are Shiraz which is heavier and has a spicey finish. The last one is Merlot (90%) and Cabernet Sauvignon which won't be as heavy but as the description says Merlot often has a kind of chocolate and pepper taste. I like it a lot and would have went for that one.

But really the best of the lot is this one that I've bought 24 of (and still have 6 from a previous case). It really is amazing wine:

Go for the Rioja that I recommended in the above post. I wouldn't call it gentle. Gentle is like a Chianti, Beaujolais (Gamay), or Pinot Noir. Their a very light wines. But smooth and fruity is rioja reserva through and through. Rioja is known for being very drinkable for all types of wine drinkers. It is fruity to. And if you buy reserva, meaning it has had at least 24 months aging in the barrel, then it is often a lot smoother than most wines because aged wine softens the tannins. Tannins are what gives the wine a dry and bitter taste once you've swallowed it. Tannins are very important and can improve wines and give them body but for those who like smooth wines you are often better off getting older vintages. The below rioja is 2002.

Another tip for making wine smoother and less bitter is to open it about an hour before drinking it in order to let it breath. You can't obviously do that all of the time but when you get a chance it's good to. Otherwise if you know you're going to be drinking the whole bottle that night then don't re-cork it. By the time you have your last glass it will probably be perfect lol!

Thanks Carl - no 'peppery' or 'spicy' for me I'm afraid - fruity only! Am off to change my order for Marques De La Concordia Rioja Reserva if I can!

Edit --> Oops - just tried online and also calling them - and I can't change any part of the order unless I cancel the entire order and start again so can't be bothered this time...

Just thought I'd bump this up as it ends tomorrow. OH ordered today - said the delivery date did not make a difference (some posters have had trouble). Remember Quidco for that extra 3% off.
