Are audio cables needed with a scart lead?

Having just bought a full HD 37 inch tv, but not yet got around to purchasing the HD box, two questions spring to mind:-
Firstly the freeview recorder box connected to the tv is via a scart lead so would there be any benefit in fitting the audio/video cables from the box to the tv or are these signals carried through the scart lead?
Secondly as the picture is now brilliant without the HD box, would there be any major difference in spending £200+ on a HD freeview recorder (or subscribing to sky/virgin etc?

Scart and HDMI cables carry both video and sound, So no additional cables are required.

Depends if your new TV has Freeview HD or just Freeview, If it has built in Freeview HD then you won't need an external box for that, however if you wish to record in HD then you may consider spending the money for this option.

    ^^^ what he said ^^^^

assuming you have a HD freeview built in , only worth getting Sky for the content . Picture Quality of Sky HD is pretty much as good as Freeview HD .

the HD content of Sky is good though .

you will need a HDMI lead if you get a Sky HD box
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:

If you buy a 21pin to 21pin scart lead then you wont need any other leads but there are some scart leads on the market that dont have all 21 pins showing or are connected.

It has freeview built in but I don't use this option as there's always something that catches your eye and requires recording, so the tv is always set to the external device setting ie set top recorder.
As I asked before though, is there such a big difference in picture quality/sound quality to warrant spending £200+ ?

So you don't have HD ( freeview external / built in or otherwise ) and is HD worth £200 ?

Make no mistake you really will see a better picture with HD . Personally i would , but i have Sky HD which gives the 2 best types of HD , Sports and Films . i cannot even watch a Footie match in Standard def anymore ( take note Channel 5)

you have a Full HD telly and you running it in 3rd gear at the moment

BTW SCART leads do not carry HD pictures , you will need a HDMI cable ( which carry sound and picture) .

you will deffinately notice a difference between the HD channels and SD ones, on freeview you get BBC HD, ITV HD, and 4HD and five HD will come in the future.

if you normally watch only watch the freview channels then it is not worth it getting virgin media or sky at all. you can always wait a short while for the freeview HD PVRs to come down in price, but that will likely happen in the new year so if you are happy missing the films over christmas in HD I would wait till then.
