Funeral flowers

A mutual friend of mine and my ex passed away this morning. My ex is currently living in Cyprus and he has asked me to send some flowers from both of us.

I've never sent flowers to a funeral before - I am also unable to make the funeral, what is the protocol? At this stage I don't know where the funeral is but I will find out soon.

First thing I would say is not everyone wants flowers at a funeral especially if its a cremation. Usually I just contact a florist local to the location and get a simple floral arrangment and say what we want the card to say. The florist then delivers it at an appropriate time to the church/service rooms.

The last time (only time, actually) I had to send flowers to a funeral I wasn't attending I used iflorist.co.uk and provided them with the date and time of the funeral and the details of the funeral director and they took care of the rest. I believe they contact the funeral director to arrange for delivery.

I did wonder if his wife would prefer a donation to charity, as he was involved with one just before he died that was very close to his heart.

Is there any way you could check what the family's wishes are?

Some only want flowers from immediate family and request a donation to a charity (which I think is a much better idea).

I can easily ask her, but not today as I don't want to add to her burden right now (I'm actually closer to her than him). I'd rather give to the charity, flowers seem a bit pointless really.

indeed. when my mum and dad died we had family flowers only and asked for donations to a nominated charity. when my cousins wife died i picked a local florist and sorted it out over the phone, turned out they were doing just about all the funeral flowers.

if there is an announcement in the paper that usually has all the details of what the deceased person wanted and the address of the funeral director. if you are giving a donation but can't make it to the funeral its usual to send a cheque to the undertaker stating which person it was for and they will do the rest. otherwise there is usually a plate at the church or crematorium for donations, again it can be best to pop it in an envelope, if you can't see anything you can always give it to the funeral director directly.

    hope this is some help

If you know the local paper, you may be able to view any funeral announcements online.

I live some distance away from them (I'm in Bristol, they are in Norfolk) so I won't see anything in the paper - I am in contact via Facebook and she did say she would post more details about the funeral later (actually she refers to it as his "party"!)

There is already a Just Giving page for donations to his charity so it would be straightforward for me to donate (I already made a donation last week but will make a bigger one this time around). That would suit me much better as my ex can make his own donation.

What I was suggesting was that if you know the name of the local paper, you may be able to search the births and deaths announcements online: you certainly can for the Newbury Weekly News!

but if it'll be on Facebook, problem solved ...

Contact the undertakers, they will know if it is family flowers only.
