Employment and Support Allowance declined claims

Does anyone know what the declined claims rates are for Employment and Support Allowance? I believe it was around 40% of all Incapacity Benefit claims that were declined and it's worse for ESA apparently. Does anyone know the payout rates? It sounds that they may be similar to Payment protection Insurance?

Thanks

  • the waters are muddied by the fact that many appeal successfully
i dont see where a comparison to PPI is relevant as most of it was mis-sold

What do you mean by payout rates?
ESA Work Capability Statistics for Oct 2008 - August 2009 were published in April 2010. You can download the document (pdf) from www.parliament.uk HERE

The headline figures (taken from the document's executive summary) are:

The result of the initial WCA is as follows:
    o Support Group - 5%
o Work Related Activity Group -13%
    o Fit for Work - 39%
o Claim closed before assessment complete - 37%
    Assessment still in progress: 5%

For all completed assessments (not including assessments still in progress or people
who left ESA before completing assessment) to the end of February 2009 the breakdown of the ATOS recommendation at initial assessment is as follows:

    o Support Group – 9%
o Work Related Activity Group -23%
    o Fit for Work - 68%

    2.1.3 WCA Appeals
Of people who made a claim for ESA between October 2008 and March 2009 and
who were found Fit for Work at assessment, 29% have had an appeal heard by
Tribunals Service to date. The original decision made by DWP has been confirmed
for 61% of these appeals heard.
