More specificaly I know that my passport needs renewing in March next year, some countries don't allow you in with less than 6 months to go ( or three months) Does anyone have a list of which countries restrict you with an almost expired passport? I understand I can renew it early and get the new passport for 10 years plus I think up to 9 months...

Everywhere within the EU you can travel up until expiry date, couldnt list every country you could fly to with that passport, are you planning on travelling to somewhere imparticular?

I think you'd need to check the passport requirements for each specific country you were considering visiting.
I wouldn't have thought there was a list of countries.

Thanks all, we are planning on a break in Oct or Nov, almost definitely Europe, I want to get one of the new design passports due out in October sometime and being a money saver I don't want to pay for a passport before I need to. I checked on the Directgov site but I couldn't see the bit where it says how long you need on your passport...I would be devastated if I turned up at the airport and was turned down!
I can go ahead and book something now wihout worrying...excellent!0

 Hi Rich
It's not really up to the UK to say how long you need on your passport to visit another country.
That's down to the individual country so you'd need to check specifically on their websites.
But as Delwyn says (assuming you have a EU passport yourself) you'll be OK for EU countries.
I gave you the link to the directgov website for info on renewal.
Have a good holiday - wherever it is.0
