Definitely let them rent if its the first time they've lived together.
They're very young, and no amount of staying over at each other's parent's houses prepares you for the reality of living together. If they're still together after 2 years of renting, then look at helping them buy.0 -

i wouldn't lend them the money, when the girlfriend gets a job they can save for a deposit.0

Why not let them live with you so that they can more quickly build up a deposit?
If they don't have kids, why don't they rent a nice little studio flat and save?
I can't understand why you would lend them your savings, burden yourself with more debt, get them into debt just so that they can live in a house....
Maybe I'm missing something.
