WordPress function.php difficulty

Hi Guys need a bit of help with some php code in my word press blog.

Here is the last few lines of my original functions.php file.
return "WEEK( DATE_SUB( $column, INTERVAL $start_of_week DAY ), 0 )";
}
}

?>
I've added the following code to the file.
<?php add_theme_support('post-thumbnails'); ?>
I've placed the new line of code immediately below ?> giving me this:
return "WEEK( DATE_SUB( $column, INTERVAL $start_of_week DAY ), 0 )";
}
}

?>
<?php add_theme_support('post-thumbnails'); ?>
been VERY careful not to leave any blank lines between the old final ?> and the new line.

However when I save it and refresh I receive the following: fatal error: Call to undefined function the_post_thumbnail() in /websites/LinuxPackage04/ba/bi/es/my-domain.com/public_html/wp-includes/functions.php on line 4300

Any ideas as to what might be wrong?

Thanks

Kevin
