TomTom Satnav for South Africa

Can anyone advise which of UK TomTom models that can be upodated with a SA travel map please. Or any ideas where to rent an inexpensive TomTom for use in SA (or has one to sell ?)

Check if your tomtom can be updated here: http://www.tomtom.com/products/maps/select.php?&Lid=1

A SA map from tomtom is around £40, though you may want to search for a "cheaper option", if you know what I mean.

Thanks - have ascertained I can down-load 1gb on to my unit BUT not at expense of £40 for the map. An alternative route would be appreciated via this site or a private message if preferred - thks

If you have a GPS enabled Android phone, there is a route finding app for SA for about £28, called Copilot. Unfortunately, the Google directions is not yet online there :(

ideally you want a one with an sd card slot but failing that one of the XL versions can be used, you might even be able to get away with the base model. Its more complicated not having an SD card slot as you have to add the maps to the tomtom once you have delete the current map after copying it and then do the same to add the current map back again.

Have a look here they always have refurb tomtoms, inlaws have bought a couple from them they look brand new http://www.totalpda.co.uk/

check the size of the map folder and the free space on the tomtom, connect to your computer click on the devices in my computer not through tomtom home. right click on the map folder its probably called UK or something like that. the size should appear either on the properties screen or on the bottom left hand corner of the my computer screen (no need to right click if it appears here). looking at tomtom you need 62.7 MB worth of space if I got your model right. As long as the folder size is bigger than this you will be ok. looking at the UK and Ireland maps on tomtom it suggests that they are 151 MB , yours might be smaller if its the UK. if yours are smaller than 62.7 MB you will need to see how much space is on the drive including the current maps and then deducting this from the total and seeing if you have enough space. If you have space you can buy the maps copy the old ones and make a back up and then delete the old ones and copy the new ones to your tomtom.

hope all of that made sense, you probably know most of it but thought it was best to add it :)
