On Santander current accounts by when do sufficient funds (or overdraft) have to be in an account in order for a direct debit to be honoured- 3.30pm on the day in question, 11.59pm the previous day or...?
I am not asking for myself!
A relative has been daft enough to open an account with them.

With all banks funds have to be in place the business day before the DD is due as that is when the collection process commences by way of ear marking those funds.
However there are ways to navigate around this. Some banks (Santander Included) will permit you to go temporarily overdrawn providing the DD amount is then credited by 4pm the day the DD goes out. Also if you have an overdraft in place with available funds equal to or greater than the DD amount then again the DD can be paid without recourse.0
