This morning i cancelled my contract with BT as i have taken out a new one with sky which is much better value.
When she looked up my account she said 'oh you have been paying a lot we havent charged that amount for a long time, let me see if i can reduce that for you'
I told her that i had already signed with sky so not to bother but i did ask why i have been paying too much and could seh tell me why if they dropped their prices a long time ago why wasnt i informed?
She said ' if you tick the box that says dont contact me with promotions or special offers they can not call you to tell you you bill has gone down!! but if i had rang them they would have told me
Is this really true? I have sent a complaint into BT and asked for the overcharge to be refunded to me but thought id check first if they are correct in what they say.
hope someone can help

What are you complaining about? You are already an ex-customer so I doubt they will be interested.
You need to physically check these things on a regular basis. The worst culprits just now are the car breakdown companies probably followed by insurance companies.0 -
I am complaining about the fact my bill went down and they didnt tell me.
The gas and Electric inform me when my payments change, my landlord lets me know when there is a change in the rent.
I am pretty certain i would have been told if my payments had gone up.
I take it from your post you agree that BT are correct in doing this??0 -

They're right.
As far as they are concerned, you are happy paying what you pay. During that time, there is no incentive for them to offer you a cheaper deal.
If you threaten to cancel, that obviously changes. They'll offer new deals to keep you as a customer.
It is not BT's job to find you the best deal - you need to look for that yourself.
As for getting a refund, good luck. They provided you with a service at a price you were willing to pay. If you didn't research alternative deals, that isn't their fault.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. I completely agree with what you are saying and I am sure i could have found a cheaper deal with any other provider but this is not what i am complaining about.
I didnt want BT to find me a better deal but if the service they were providing me had become cheaper, for whatever reason, they should have let me know.
If its cheaper due to a special offer then i understand i would not have recieved that information if i had ticked the box but its cheaper because they have dropped the price of that package so its not a offer or a deal or a bribe to keep me with BT.
She didnt know even know I was leaving when she said 'we havent charged that amount for a long time' she said its because i ticked that box so that means if i didnt tick it they would have told me it was now cheaper.
Thank you for your replies and you may well be right but i still think its unfair. Will see what they say... first I would like to see proof that I even ticked that box0 -

None of it is unfair though. BT and all the other companies always change prices and have special offers on. It does not mean that they should automatically put you on that service as you have signed a contract for what you were paying and you were happy enough to do this - why should they then put you on a cheaper contract?"If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -

Your bill didn't go down they maintained it as per your original agreement. Stinks doesn't it ?
The gas and electricity tell you when their prices go up if you have one who tells when the prices go down do share.
Unfortunately companies have no loyalty to regular long term customers which is why you have to check regularly it doesn't matter if its car insurance, utilities or anything."The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

To have an argument on that front, you also need to check that the name of the tariff / service plan that you were on is EXACTLY the same as the tariff / plan that has now reduced in price. If the name is different, even slightly, then they have done nothing wrong. In that case, they haven't reduced your bill, they are just offering customers the same or a similar service under a different name.
I suspect that is more the case. The tariff that you were on may well have been discontinued and a new plan, with a new name and a lower price, opened up. It's a very common practice in utilities and finance industries.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature.
