BT Line Rental + Sky Broadband Unlimited + Sky Talk Freetime?

Hi,

I'm thinking about going for BT's Line Rental Saver deal for £9.49 per month (when paying 12 months up front). However, it says on their website that you need to make at least two calls a month to avoid a £1.50 monthly charge.

If I then get the Sky Broadband Unlimited with Sky Talk Freetime deal for £10 per month, will I still be able to make the two calls required by BT using the 1280 prefix?

I suppose in the worst case, I won't be able to and will end up paying £10.99 per month for line rental, which is still pretty cheap. But it makes me worry about BT's "free" BT Answer 1571 and BT Privacy at Home, which would cost an additional £3.50 per month (£1.00 + £2.50) unless I make 2 calls with BT. Should I avoid these services altogether?

Thanks for any advice.

If you go for SkyTalk you will not be able to make any calls through BT, even if you use an override.

BT Answer is always a con in my view. Those who pay for their calls have to pay 16p or so every time it answers. People never seem to listen to see if they have any messages, made all the worse by cordless phones whereby they pre-dial the number and so never have a chance to hear the dial tone. I never leave people messages on it any more. All my relatives don't have it any longer, you get the engaged tone when they are on the phone, far better.

BT Privacy is pretty good though.
  • Good to know, thanks for the quick response :)

I just had a quick thought:

BT force you to choose their free Unlimited Weekend Calling Plan (12 month contract) with line rental. Will this clash with Sky Talk Freetime, since I won't be paying BT for calls? I don't want to get stung for an Unlimited Weekend Calling Plan early cancellation charge!

No, it won't clash, you'll just be unable to use it (e.g. for inclusive calls Sky Talk Freetime won't give you).

Remember though that you will get stung for that £1.50/month for not making calls via BT and, if you use it, will also have to pay for Caller Display (your incomng calls will still arrive on BT so, like 1571, Caller Display remains a BT service).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
