Very.co.uk Direct Debit problem

Options
I have recently checked my credit report. Everything is good except for a late payment on my Very account.

I have had a Direct Debit setup for this account for over a year. I pay everything direct debit because I always forget when things need to be paid so I just leave the money in the bank and its sorted.

According to my report, I made a late paymet a few months back. When checking my bank account it showed no payment for June and a payment for twice them amount as normal in July. Obviously I am not happy about this as I have a direct debit setup with them. I spoke to my bank and they have said no request for payment was made in June. I contacted Very, as I feel this is unfair that my credit report is being affected because they did not request a payment. This was their reply:

Thank you for your e-mail.

Very will give you advance notice of the collection dates and amounts, whether you set up a Direct Debit by the telephone, Internet or by completing a paper Direct Debit Instruction. It is sensible to check your Bank statement regularly to ensure that all your Direct Debits are going out as shown on your advance notice. Your payment will appear on your bank statement as Shop Direct Group.

Please note: once you have requested a direct debit be set up, you will need to continue to make payments on your account as normal until your monthly statement indicates that your payment will be taken by direct debit. Your statement will tell you the amount of the payment and the date it will be taken from your bank / building society account.

As if they are saying its my fault for not making sure the payment was made on time. I thought the whole point of setting up a direct debit was to make things easier to pay. Granted I should check my accounts more often but I expect a company to take its payment when needed and at the least, admit when they have made a mistake.

Where do I stand with this? I dont think it is fair that my credit report could be effected because of their mistake after working hard on improving it over the last 4 years.

Have you spoken to your bank
    was it their fault
was the DD set up prior to this or was this the first month it was set up for -
did the bank start it on the agreed date?

Edit : just noticed has been set up over a year so i would be having serious questions with your bank

It sounds as though it was their error in failing to request the direct debit, and the response they have sent you sounds more like a standard response than a reply which someone has actually read. I would reply to them and make it clear that their e-mail is unacceptable and you would appreciate a response which actually addresses your issues. Tell them what you want them to do (ie sort out your credit report) and give them a timeframe in which to respond and act. If not, then it might be worth contacting the credit report agencies and asking for their advice.
  • I have credit expert looking into it for me at the moment and I have sent Very another email. Will have to see what their reply is :)
