  • Hi there

first of all calm down and don't be scared. It must be a horrible feeling but plese take a big deep breath.

Someone will let you know what you need to take with you (sorry I have not yet been to court so don't know myself) but just remember the staff at the courts are not ogres and they are there to help and guide you.

Good luck and I am sure you will post when you get back saying "well it wasn't as bad as I thought...."

take care and please try not to worry so much

  • Calm down - its a scary prospect going to court, but its actually (well, was for us last week) just like going to an office.

You won't be refused for BR if you can't pay your debts as they become due, and as long as you have sought advice from the debt charities.

On the day, you take your BR fee in cash, the paperwork the court sent you (statement of affairs and declaration) - 3 copies of each, if you're applying for a discount on the fee because you're getting benefits, you need that form too. Other than that, some change for the coffee machine, a magazine or newspaper (theres a fair bit of hanging around to be done) and thats your lot.
  • Don't worry, I went bankrupt last year. The court staff were very friendly as was the judge. Only spent about 3 mins in front of the judge, he seemed more concerned about me and my welfare than the creditors. The official receiver and staff were very very helpful.
I would dress as if your were going for an interview or business meeting (makes you feel good), take all your paperwork with you.
Have some cash to buy a coffee and kitkat.
It has happened to all sorts of people you would be amazed.
Now mines over and I look back its the best thing I did in years. Now no debts, no hassle, no problem renting, Bank account with coop easy peasy just walk in tell them your bankrupt, take 2 forms of ID and you can start a new account.
Good Luck. Tomorrows another day. :)

Hi doublemum, like the others said, as long as you have 3 copies of your form, the exemption form if you need it, your £600, change for car park/coffee etc and preferably someone hold your hand. We went br back in aug and the court was so straightforward and we really did come out thinking 'was that it?' and also breathing a huge sigh. Everyone was really nice and friendly and bankruptcy was a day to day thing for them so it was professional and businesslike. You'll be fine. Let us know how you get on on Thurs.

    Hi doublemum

Just to say the advice from everyone above is spot on, however we only needed to take the original form and 1 copy with us to our local court. You might want to ring your court up and check? Thats what I did, they were really helpful on the phone, and it saved us endless more photocopying !! They also gave us an idea of how long we might be there and the best time to turn up (ours is a walk in court, no appt necessary).

But whatever you do, its completely normal to feel scared, but you will be absolutely fine. Good luck.

  • I'd just like to say good luck, I was completely terrified about the whole thing.. would they could they etc But the experience was a calm quick one and almost to easy. Try to stay calm ... I was suprisingly calm on the day .. even took 2 of my kiddies with me. You will be fine x

  • Not something I've experienced but its civil court. Its NOT like 99% of court things you've seen on TV. Its sort of everyday law is the best way I can describe it, therefore things are pretty informal.

Its the impression of court on TV companies rely on to scare people when they threaten court action. Let us know how it goes, am sure you will be fine, left wondering what all the fuss was about.

There is nothing to fear but fear itself.

  • One question, i bank with natwest at the mo, with no debts with them, i know about the freezing off my account, but need a bank account asap for money coming in, i don't have a co-op branch local to me so even tho i have debts with barclaycard, on friday once i am bankrupt can i open an account with barclays???
