trying to update my Netgear router firmware

I have a Netgear WGR614v9 from Virgin and am trying to update it to the latest firmware. When I download the latest firmware from

http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13279/related/1/session/L2F2LzEvc2lkL2h2a2xSMWJr

I get WGR614v9-V1.2.30_41.0.44.chk

.chk seems to be a "recovered file fragment" type of file, and when I try to upload it to my router it says: "invalid filename was provided, please try again"

Can anyone help?

Netgear can call the file anything they like, but it doesn't seem particularly intelligent to choose the .CHK extension!

Don't you just have to go into the administration interface and specify that filename to perform a firmware upgrade, as it says in the Installation Instructions?
  • Are you trying to upgrade from the router or from Windows.

Use a wired connection not wireless and follow their instructions.
    1. Open a Web browser.
    2. Access the router (http://192.168.1.1 or the Default Gateway address if the router's default IP was changed).
    3. Log in the router (User Name = admin and Password = password, unless you changed it).
    4. Write down all settings that you entered when previously configuring. This includes information such as ISP configuration and wireless security settings.
    5. Under Maintenance, click Router Upgrade.
    6. Click Browse and locate the firmware upgrade file.
    7. Click Upload.
    8. Wait for the router to reboot.
    9. Under Maintenance, click Settings Backup, then click Erase. (Or press the reset button on the back for 10 seconds.)
    10. Wait one minute for the router to reboot.
    11. Manually enter the configuration information you wrote down in Step 5.

That's what I'm doing but it isnt working. I read somewhere you should use IE rather than Firefox but when i try IE ts still doesnt work although it seems to at least try it before telling me it's failed:

"Firmware upgrade failed. Please check your file."

can the one provided by virgin even be updated? I thought it was 'brand locked' so to speak.

is there a major need for you to update? the changes in the change log seem pretty minor.

May I ask why you are trying to upgrade the firmware spaceboy. Any particular reason to this.

Your also better using a firmware made by DGTeam

Well the latest one is: 1.2.30

So I was thinking my current one is quite old.

    I have: V1.0.11_1.0.1VGUK

V1.0.11_1.0.1VGUK yeah the "VGUK" stands for virginUK so I would say it has custom firmware on it so can't be updated, there's not really any reason to update unless you have a major problem with the router.

Edit: yes the virgin routers are locked with no option to update.

Edit2: after further research I have found you can debrand your virgin router using these instructions http://www.vpncasestudy.com/download/WGR614/howtovirginbrandedhack.pdf (pdf warning and, as it says, it is at your own risk) the thread I got the info from
