    Thanks for the replies! :D

A surprise party in in the pipeline where many old mining friends and the like are coming. It's my sons 13th birthday that day too so it's going to be a big one!

I've looked into a short visit on the battlefield tours so that's an idea. We took him to Berlin 2 years ago and he loved it.

    Still struggling though!

Big Pit Museum in Wales is free and you can go undergroud. Maybe a chance to bond with Grandson.

Thanks Monkeyspanner, what a fabtastic idea!! :j

I've found one in Wakefield a little closer to home and it would be great for him to show our son what mining was like as he was a safety officer!!

    He'll love it too!!:D

The NCM at Wakefield is absolutely brilliant, lots of stuff including gimormous machinery, lamp and tag for when you go underground (do not try this if you're claustrophobic!), a great cafe and one last pit pony.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Just back from a fantastic afternoon with my now 70 year old dad (today) at the National Coal Mining Museum at Caphouse Colliery, near Wakefield.

    It was ALL FREE:j

We spent nearly 2 hours walking above ground at everything and then went down the shaft for a wonderful hour of walking down memory lane for him. I was a little apprehensive as some of the tunnels were not very high, but I'm glad I went down too.

The guide miner was great and our group did a lovely rendition of Happy Birthday to my dad and son 140 metres below ground.

A great day was had by all!!:D

Thanks again Monkeyspanner for the idea:T

Congratulations to your Dad and son! What great day, and present!

Oh and I don't want any possessions, we have loads to get rid off. But treats and experiences, especially with the family are priceless.

So pleased to hear your dad enjoyed it. It's an amazing place and just down the road from me, I've attended quite a few conferences there.

How about National Trust membership if he likes going out and about? Or English Heritage?
By the time you've reached the age of 70 most people have acquired all the material things they need and priorities change. I certainly feel that your time would be more precious to him that any material gift. How about taking him away for a week-end?
