Can anyone help?

Hi
This is my first post and I have absolutely no idea where to post it so please feel free to move it!
A couple of months ago my OH recieved 4 cheques in the post totalling over £1200, we were quite obviously surprised! The cheques did not have anything with them such as a letter etc, just four cheques in brown envelopes with HM Revenue and Customs printed on them. OH phoned them and they told us that they were backdated tax something or other, he can't remember exactly what she said but she said all was ok and we were entitled to it so not to worry, since then we have had 2 or 3 cheques every month totalling different amounts but all over £350, now this money is very welcome don't get me wrong (esp since we have baby no 2 on the way!) but we are worried that at some point in the future they are going to say they made a mistake and they are going to want the money back which we definately would not be able to afford.
Does anyone have any idea what these cheques could be? thanks in advance :)

What about paying the cheques into a savings account earning you some interest. If they decide the money needs to be paid back, at least you'll still have the original sum intact.

I wouldn't spend it if I were you for a while at least until you know 100% for sure they money is definitely yours to keep.
Be happy, it's the greatest wealth :)

I would echo this. Unless you know for certain that this is money you are entitled to, you would be very foolsh to spend it - regardless of whether you have a baby on the way or not.

A savings account is a great idea. That way, you will atleast gain something from the money even if it has to be paid back.
  • Op do you and you're family receive tax credits ?

If you do then you should have received an award notice sometime around May/June/July time . On this award notice there would be details of the amounts of tax credits payable to you and the dates on which the payments are to be made.

    Does this sound familiar ?

Tax credits are usually paid directly into a bank account though , not by cheque ?

Are you or you're husband self employed ?
