Paying by debit card in a strip club

Last night was out in Manchester for my mate birthday and later on we decided to head to a strip club.

I got a dance which I paid for by cash then I got offered an extra private dance for a certain price. I said I had no money but the dancer said I could pay by card so I drunkenly and stupidly agreed to.

I went to the bar and entered the card into the chip and pin machine and tried to pay. It was declined probably because the account has next to no money in it. We tried again a couple of times but it still declined. My memory is a bit blurry but I am sure they then gave me a sheet for my signature, which I gave them and I think the guy then took details off my card.

At this point I made my excuses and left.

So far today there is no money missing from the account but I am obviously a bit concerned as I know the reputation strip clubs have for ripping off people who are daft enough to pull out their card.

Should I be concerned? What should I do?

Pray that you didn't sign a manual slip for too much money?

That's silly. Rather you should pray they didn't put to much money on the slip after you left :D

and yes you are likely to screwed (financially not physically though) - you paid for a service.
Santander are awful - mission in life is to warn people since 17-Sep-10, 18-Sep-10 realised one of thousands.
  • Just off the phone to my bank who I explained the situation to honestly and they cancelled the card. I asked if there was any transactions attempted but she couldn't check at this time.

What I don't understand is if the club were to now try and charge me (even though I left and never recieved any services), how come I can just cancel my card and get away without paying? Say I had went through with paying by card and recieved the service, it seems that I could just phone the bank to cancel my card and I would never pay for the service?

You didn't actally pay by card though. They just took down your card details to be charged at some future time, which they can no longer do. It's the same as writing a cheque that later bounces.

If you signed a slip the transaction was authorised and the bank must pay it, even though you have now cancelled your card. The reason for the card cancellation is to prevent any further transactions. All I can suggest you do, is keep an eye on your account, and you will know when the payment is debited.
    Best Regards

Wouldn't the words 'verified by PIN' give the game away somewhat?

Wow, 4 posts in the space of a minute. It's amazing what an effect certain keywords in a thread title can have! ;)

Maybe it was pay on entry only...?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
