Parking In a CPZ with insuffcient signage - is that good enough

Hi I hope one of you might be able to help. Today I recieved my first parking ticket in 20yrs of driving I suppose I have been lucky not to have received one before but I dont feel I should have been given one today. I am not a resident of Kingston upon Thames and only visit on a rare occassion. When ever I go to Kingston on a Sunday I park in the Bittoms road which is a single yellow line. There are and never have been any signs up to say you are not allowed to park here. A warden decided today to issue 9 tickets to the cars that were parked there and another car owner & myself were able to speak to the gentleman. We asked him where the sign was, he couldnt see one he radio'd his supervisor who said it was a CPZ and that the sign was in Penryn road this road is approx 1.5 miles long. There were no signs up in the Bittoms or on the journey up Penryn road to say that the Bittoms was a CPZ. The Sign the Supervisor said was at the start of Penryn road about 1 mile away and also when looking on the Kingston Website Penryn Road is in 2 different CPZ zones. The Warden advised us to dispute it which I am really wondering if this is the right thing to do £50 for me today is a lot of money. So can anyone help me?? I would appreciate any help on this one - thank you x

  • First things first. Photo/copy the pcn (both sides)and remove personal details. Host pics on tinypic and copy the url. Paste it into a post on here and remove the http:// bit.

CPZ zones can be huge with many different access points into them, best to get a map and a copy of the parking order for the council cpz's. Once you have that you can go about marking the particular cpz on the map and check the signage into the zones, on entry to a cpz there MUST be two cpz signs if the road is over 5M wide as stated in the RTA

    (4) Where the relevant road has one carriageway, then signs to which this direction applies need only be placed on one side of the relevant road to indicate the point at which a restriction, requirement, prohibition (but not a speed limit) begins in the following cases -

      (a) where the restriction, requirement or prohibition applies only to traffic on one side of the relevant road; or

      (b) at a junction where -

        (i) traffic proceeding on another road on which it is permitted to proceed only in one direction turns into the relevant road; or

(ii) the carriageway of the relevant road is less than 5 metres wide and the sign is so placed that its centre is within 2 metres of the edge of the carriageway.
