argos, broken camera, help needed.

Hi all. Basically my girlfriend has been having some trouble with argos, and some cameras she purchased. In about april of this year, she bought a camera from argos, and it broke the first time she used it. Her and her mum tryed to go in and get this sorted, but they were sent away because she hadn't bought the warrenty package. I found out about this quite recentley when i found the broken camera sitting around doing nothing, after she'd bought a new one.
Its quite obvious to me that Argos have no right to act like this, and i want to do something!
My first plan of action is to go into the store and confront the manager, armed with some legistlation documents stating that what they are doing is illegal. I realise a refund might be out of the question because of how long ago it was purchased, but they should be at least replacing it, or giving store credit.
But i need to know what documents these would be, and what main parts to highlight. Could any of you fine people point me in the direction of some PDFs?
Im looking for bits of law that says i have one year after purchase to act if it brakes, or something similar.
What would be the right course of action to take in this scenario, and what would everyone suggest? Thanks in advance

Most importantly, do you have any proof of purchase? Receipt? Bank Statement? Because without it you will in all probability get nowhere at all.
If you do have any of the above you can expect the item to be sent away and repaired. I doubt they will do a straight replacement.0 -
There must be some sort of misunderstanding here, if you bought the camera in April and you have a receipt or other proof of purchase Argos will be fine about. They may give you a refund, but more likely they will replace or repair it.0

What do you mean when you say it broke the first time she used it, I mean, what bit has broken? Is it possible it doesn't work because it has been manhandled/dropped? I'm not saying this has happened but if it's a possibility Argos may not want to replace it?"A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on" - Winston Churchill0

If something is not fit for the purpose, the purchaser is entitled to a refund. You do not have to accept a repair. As it broke immediately, that's covered. For Argos to say 'no refund without warranty package' is not only a lie, it's a criminal offence.
Receipts aren't necessary - they are not legally obliged to give you one, so they cannot demand one back. They do make life an awful lot easier though, particularly if the same item can be obtained elsewhere (which it can).
The problem arises because (if) there is no receipt, and because you've waited so long. Presumably you can't prove that you went back at once, either.
Don't go back to the store with a confrontation in mind. All they'll probably do is make a false accusation against you. Conduct this matter in writing only and direct your efforts entirely to head office.
Although you are technically entitled to more, in this case you may have to count yourself lucky if you get a voucher."Never underestimate the mindless force of a government bureaucracyseeking to expand its power, dominion and budget"Jay Stanley, American Civil Liberties Union.0 -
proof of purchase is present, but they are refusing to do anything because a warrenty was not purchased along with the camera. I dont know how it broke, it just will not turn on now. It dosent look physically damaged.0

As I said, this is a misunderstanding Argos would not say that if the product is still under guarantee.0 -
The camera does not need an extra warranty, it is covered by a 1 year manufacturers guarantee.
They are talking rubbish. When you go back in speak to the Manager, and none of this confrontation rubbish, speak calmly and
clearly, take it from there.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
I didn't mean confront as in kick up a fuss, i just meant tell him that I know im entitled to at least a repair.0

Have you tried charging the camera/using fresh batteries? Maybe the camera was dropped?0

When you say it is broken what is the actual fault? Even if they assumed it was accidental damage you can still insist they send it off to be examined via their repairs service.0
