How do I buy bonds

I would like to invest in either Artemis Strategic Bond fund managed by James Foster & Alex Ralph or James Gledhill's New Star High Yield Bond fund.
Does anybody know the best way to buy into these bond funds as I am a complete novice.

Which tax wrapper do you wish to buy it in. Unit Trust, ISA, SIPP or Investment bond?
In natural unit trust form you can buy direct from the fund house if they have a direct to consumer distribution channel or through an IFA (discount or full advice).
In ISA, SIPP, UT and investment bond you can buy it through a fund supermarket which is usually the most convenient way. If you dont want advice then Hargreaves Landsdown are usually suggested on here. They are generally considered to be amongst the cheapest. I think HL do it in ISA, SIPP and UT form but not Investment bond form.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0 -
Discount broker like HL would be the way to go.
Watch out for the reinvestment of income though, as I'm pretty sure that New Star will charge the full initial charge on reinvestments even if the original initial charge was discounted.
Artemis may well do the same, but it's outside my experience.0 -

I would go to the website of a discount broker such as Commshare or Hargreaves Lansdown or have a look at a list on such sites as Fool.com
and see if they are offering a good discount (although I seem to remember that when I had M&G Corporate Bond there was no initial charge). Also, if you intend to drip money in and not pay a lump sum you will see what the smallest amount per month is. You could have a mini ISA (£4000) or MAXI (£7000) or just buy without this wrapper.0
