Scrapping a car?

My car, after 15 years stirling service, seems to be at the end of its viable life. It won't stay in 5th gear and I have been told it probably needs a new gearbox which will cost £400-500?
I don't need it anyway now, I can get the bus to work really easily and to be honest running a car is a expense I don't need right now.
My question is...what is the best way to scrap or get rid of a car? There are adverts in my local paper saying they will pay to pick it up and all paperwork dealt with but as they only have mobile numbers they seem a bit dodgy to me? Could I sell it on Ebay or Gumtree or advertise it (and of course I would be honest about any problems? Apart from its gearbox it runs fine and indeed has 10 months left on its MOT. The Insurance runs out in late Oct so I need to get cracking I guess.
Any Suggestions?

Ebay, if it'll drive in 4 gears, it'll sell well enough.0

Ebay or local auction house with a reserve of what you would get it you drove it to your local scrapyard so £125 maybe £150
With a long MOT and a reasonable runner I'd be surprised if you didn't get close to £500 even with a slight gearbox fault0 -

could it be a linkage issue?0
