Hi All

Had recent problem with slow laptop and was resolved but it has come back!

I have noticed that presentationfontcache.exe is using between 80 & 90% of my CPU usage and CPU usage runs at 100%.

I had a google and found lots of very techis answers and on a microsft gelp page it said to disable which i have done, anone know of a long term fix please?

Thanks

    Hi PJB

The simple solution: If all your programs work OK without the service running, you may wish to just leave it that way.

Windows itself comes with a great number of services, and other applications may install them. The presentationfontcache is part of a library of code supplied by Microsoft that other applications can utilise to provide functionality. If the library (.NET 3 or higher) gets installed, some of the services it provides automatically get started *whether they are used or not*. Most ordinary home users can stop an extraordinarily large number of services and still have a fully operational system.

If an application doesn't work or a previously working operation fails, try enabling the service temporarily to see if it's the cause.

The harder solution (2 minutes!): reinitialise the service as follows:-

    1. Stop the presentationfontcache service
    2. Open Explorer and find the folder C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local

If you can't see this folder then google displaying hidden files and folders. If you can't see the file extensions, then it's in the same settings dialog ;-)

    3. If the files FontCache3.0.0.0.dat or FontCache4.0.0.0.dat exist, rename them by changing the ".dat" to ".old" (click yes at the prompt)
    4. Restart the service.
    5. Give it a few minutes - all should be OK.

Thank you very much for your detailed reply, seems to have worked a treat!
