........ what is typical opening credit limit ?

Mother just got her Saga card through, £3,300 limit. She's not retired yet though although when she applied she had £4,000 debt and £5,000 available credit (ish) on £30K income.
Math... Total debt was 13% Salary. Total available was 17% Salary, including new limit total available is now 28% Salary - so an indebtness potential of ~40% income.
