Blocked Drain

I have a drain that is inside a badly constructed lean-to, bought the house last Dec and it is now slightly overflowing(the drain...not the lean to). I think the dishasher and washing machine empty via it.

Whilst we are desperately saving to replace the lean to with something much more substantial. Has anybody got any good advice on how to unblock it, we haven't much spare cash kicking about and if I can do it, that would be better.

Please note I am not the brightest button in the box, and any advice would have to be total idiot guide

Check the gully grid (perforated metal dish that fits over the drain). They can become blocked up with the gunge from the washing machine etc. Remove it from the gully, clean it up and replace Also use this opportunity to remove any leaves etc.
Fingers crossed this will solve your problem.

If it's a gully then the problem is either the trap or the grid (or both), grid is easy to clean, trap can be cleared by hand with long gloves (or just grin & bare it bare armed)

Thank you all for your replies.

I ended up getting a quote from a plumber who said it would be about 3.5 hours work, and at £30 an hour. I queried this with a good friends husband (who is a builder) and he came round and basically rammed it with my mop, and it's all unblocked!!!!

    Saved over £100!
