how far do u need to travel before you before you are eligible for a discount???

It's not about distance, it's about cost. If you are travelling for contact and not already getting a shared care reduction, you can apply for a variation on the grounds of contact costs. They average these out (so if you go once a month they work out the weekly cost of that trip) then anything over £15pw is taken off the net income used to calculate maintenance.

It often doesn't make a great deal of difference though as few people spend much over £15 a week when you sit down and do the maths. Here's an example:

NRP earns £300pw net, and is paying maintenance for 1 child at 15% which is £45pw. He drives twice a month to visit the child for the day, using a full tank of petrol each time at £50 a throw so total costs of £100 per month. £100 per month works out as £23.07pw (this is 100 x 12 divided by 52). 1st £15pw is disregarded leaving £8.07. This is deducted from weekly net income to give a new figure of £291.93. 15% of this is £43.78 which is rounded up to £44. Therefore in this case a spend of £100 per month to see the child results in a reduction of £1pw in maintenance payable. So as I say, it often makes very little difference.
