Cupcake Display for Engagement party

Options
I am planning to make a display of cupcakes for my son's engagement party in 3 weeks time. (For around 100 people)

Does anyone have any suggestions for cheap places to get cupcake cases,& stands to display cakes on, or ways of making own stands. Also looking for good, cheap icing set.

I'm going to get books out of the library for ideas on making the cupcakes.

Any suggestions would be gratefully recieved please.

ive recently bought some from ebay, if you search for cupcake stand, go to buy it now, theres a metal one for £4 something yet buy 2 get one free
    they each hold 13 cakes
you could hire one i suppose but this way youd get to keep them for other occasions :)
if im allowed to link the ebay listing on here, im not sure if i am though :o
also please let me know of any decent recipes for cupcakes, im supposed to be making some for next saturday yet my trail ones have been a bit of a let down tbh :(
also where icing bags are concerned, mine always burst, ive now bought some disposable ones in the hope that they will do the job.

i also bought some edible glitter from ebay, i got the black and the pink ones and kids and girlies love it... fairy dust lolol

    good luck :)

Sainsbury's have recently relaunched their baking section, and they've started to do some cupcake bits and pieces. I'm not sure of the prices, but you can get cases, stands (I think they're 2-tier but I'm not sure) and the 'wrappers'. I can't recall the prices off the top of my head, but they're not dear and would probably work out similar to ebay prices once you add postage etc. Might be worth a look in your local store.

I made my own for daughter's party, I made it out of the back of a bookcase that was going to the tip and some dowelling from B and Q. I measured squares that increased in size, cut them out then cut the dowelling to equal lengths and screwed it all together. We painted it pink with some leftover paint. It looked great!! We put a little screw in hook on the top and tied helium balloons to it. I can take a photo and e mail it to you if you like? You could copy it easily enough. I think it held about 50 cakes.
  • Morrissons have cupcake cases and even have foil ones, I think they were 99p but may have been on offer. They do a cardboard cupcake stand too but I didn't notice how much it was. I got a large plastic icing syringe set from a shop called Clas Ohlson if you have one of those, if not Lakeland had some but theirs were pricier, mine was £7.99 but Lakeland one was about £20.
  • If you use silicon cases to bake the cupcakes you don't need to waste money on buying separate ones. I take it you will be baking them in batches anyway? The silicon cases are on offer in Asda at the moment at 3 for 2, or alternatively you can get about 12 silicon cases from Tesco for about £2. I use the silicon cases and they work a treat.

With regards to a stand, I have been on the hunt for one for a while and found one in The Works (the stationary shop) of all places the other week!

I think this was £7.99 and holds 24 cakes.
The sainsburys stand is cardboard but a pretty pattern.

How about borrowing lots of pretty normal cakestands from friends and having different types on each stand? Different levels looks pretty.
  • My cake teacher had an idea for a cheap and easy cupcake stand. Just get cake boards (the thick drum ones) in reducing sizes and polystyrene spacers from a cake shop, and then you can make any size stand you want and you can use the cake boards afterwards. Most cake shops stock these, I get mine from www.cakecraftworld.com.
As for a good cupcake recipe, see if you can get any Peggy Porschen books from the library as her cupcake recipe is really good, you can flavour the cakes with syrup (its not hard) and makes flat cupcakes which are better to ice.
Otherwise as other posters have said, at the moment Morrisons and Sainsburys seem to have all their cupcake stuff on offer, I got some really nice spotty cupcake cases in Morrisons and used them for a party the other week, they looked really good.
One final tip, try to remove the cakes whilst warm from the cupcake tin and leave them to cool on a rack to try to reduce the case separating from the cake.
    Hope it all goes well!
:j Is MSE saving me money, or making me spend more on all the bargains?!:j
  • the works are 5.99 and hold 23 cupcakes. are spiralled underneath so wouldnt matter if they were muffins or mini cakes :-)

    Interesting ideas here.....

This one looks like it would be easy to make and look impressive with lots of cakes on it.

  • I bought my own cake stand as I wanted to do a cupcake tower cake for my mums retirement last year. I bought it from ebay, a seller called Classikool, here is the link to the one I bought http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/5-TIER-CUPCAKE-WEDDING-FAIRY-CUP-CAKE-STAND-LTD-OFFER-/170366225112?pt=Uk_Crafts_Cake_Decorating_MJ&hash=item27aa9e4ad8

here is what it looked like -

    cupcake5.jpg

as for cupcakes, do a nice mixture of -

    8oz sr flour
    8oz sugar
    8oz margarine / butter
    4 eggs
    dash of milk

this will make 36 buns easily, or 2 dozen muffin sized.

as for sprinkles, Asda do 2 for £1 of their own make, you can get little white chocolate stars, jelly diamonds, micro marshmallows, they are great!! :o
You're so very special, I wish I was special
