Deed Poll - Changing your name

I am in the process of changing my surname.
There seems to be two options: 1) use a government organisation, part of the hmcourts service, which says that two witnesses and the presence of a solicitor (unless you go to London) are required. In addition the change has to be advertised in the London Gazette (cost £66 + solicitor).
2) Use one of the many companies on the web eg The Legal Deed Poll Service that tells you no solicitor and no advertisement in the London gazette is required. The cost appears to be around £13. Is this too good to be true!
Can anyone give any advice?

Get a Solicitor to prepare a change of name deed plus 10 certified copies for an all in price. Shop around about 75 plus VAT should do it.
You then sign the deed and forward the c copies to the appropriate organisations and done no need to do a Deed Poll unless there is a specific reason why it should be done that way?All my views are just that and do not constitute legal advice in any way, shape or form.£2.00 savers club - £20.00 saved and banked (got a £2.00 pig and not counted the rest)Joined Store Cupboard Challenge]0 -
There was a thread on here recently about this and someone said that you don't need to pay, you can print the forms online and get a couple of friends as witnesses - job done!Slimming World - 3 stone 8 1/2lbs in 7 months and now at target :j0

Whilst on the subject of name changing i was wondering if i could have a bit of input on my situation.
Im thinking of changing my surname so it is the same as my sons. He just started school and the teachers etc are for ever calling me Mrs **** (my sons last name), and i also recieve letters with his last name on for me some of which have been important, which has caused problems.
Does anyone think its worth it? Im not to sure but think its nice for us all to have the same surname.
Has anyone else done this? How would i go about doing it? i have googled but not sure if the sites are legit.
Thanks

Thanks for sharing this. I have had concerns about what I see as a DIY approach but if official bodies like the Inland Revenue, Passport Office, Utilities and my University all accept the deed then this would be the ideal solution.0
