Peugeot ABS ring

I've recently aquired a Peugeot 306 2.0 HDI which, although 6 years old has a very low mileage and hasn't really been driven at all for the past year. It failed its MOT last month due to a broken ABS ring which my mechanic managed to solder together. However, now the other one has gone and as half is missing he can't repair it. I don't even know what an ABS ring looks like but he tells me that it's not a part that can be bought seperately and he'll have to fit a whole new drive shaft.Does anyone know whether this is correct? Sounds expensive to me...
