My SL repayments don't seem to be deducted - should I investigate or not?

Options
Hi there.

I've started a job and my SL payments don't seem to be deducted from my wages. It's not written on the payslip, but there's a possibility the amount may be less because I haven't worked for a while.

Now I'm not trying to get out of paying it obviously I will have to eventually, but I have problem debts and it would be better for me to channel the money towards high APR debts at the moment.

So wondering what would happen if I leave things as they are. When they get round to catching up, can they hit me with a lump sum for the missing payment...or could I get done for not getting in touch?

Is there a discreet way of finding out if it is being deducted?

Cheers, A

    When did you graduate?
Your student loan repayments will normally start on 6 April after you graduate, or stop attending your course.
  • Back in 2002...so can't be that. Thanks though.

Have you previously been repaying your student loans?
When you got your new job did you provide your employers with a P45 or fill out a P46?

The P45 from your previous job should have said that you have student loans to repay therefore if this is your first payslip of your new job it may be that they'll start repayments from your next payslip.
Check with your payroll department to see if they have information about your student loans.

Did you earn more than £1250 a month?

Thanks. I haven't been repaying them for a while, as I was off work sick for 2 years. Before that, they were deducted through PAYE.

I filled out a p46 (I think) it had an option to tick for when your student loan started, and as I have 2 one before 1999 and one after maybe this caused confusion.

I will be on more than 1250 gross a month (paid weekly)

Perhaps it will readjust when I've had a few more payslips.

I could enquire, but that may result in the situation getting changed...so what I'm really asking is will there be any consequences to leaving it for now and concentrating on the bad debts.

Are all of your loans income based?
Providing you ticked the student loans box on your P46 when you handed it to your new employer you shouldn't get penalised for them not taking your student loan repayments for a few months. It's always taken two or three months to start repayments for my and my OH's student loans when we've started new jobs.
But I would follow it up if it's more than a couple of months.
