Everything is Crashing!

Further to my blaming of Vista updates for crashing my PC, I know realise it probably isn't that.
I tried to run Mal. Bytes quick scan and it freezes after two seconds of the scan. Anything other than very basic programmes like word and IE seem to freeze up.
I'm tempted to restore to factory settings again, but I only did this less than 2 months ago.
My hard drive is 50% full and I have 2GB of RAM, so it shouldn't be an issue with my PC hitting capacity.
Any suggestions?

edit: I should mention that the Mal. Bytes scan does eventually complete after 5 minutes and finds no malware. AVG also reports no bugs.Saving and spending in equal measure0

I had no end of problems with Vista. Usually driver errors.
Upgrading to win 7 (64) worked for me. Ummed, and ahhed about the expense, but it was worth it.0 -

You seem to have Windows Defender and AVG installed. I would remove both and install either Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast 5 and also uninstall Spybot. Malwarebytes should be your main malware removal tool.
The rest looks ok.0 -
Great thanks.
I'd only just installed Spybot to do a scan, so that will be removed now. Windows Defender had only just been turned on too!
Good advice about ditching AVG, I've wanted to ditch them for a while but was unsure of a suibtable alternative.Saving and spending in equal measure0 -
Update:
Just rebooted my PC, now it can't make it to the Windows Desktop! Just hangs on a black screen. Have tried system repair and it can't fix my problem.
I need to get to my hard drive so I can back thinsg up (last backed up a couple of weeks ago) then I think I'll restore to factory settings and start again. Something has made my PC very ill, and because I only restored it to FS a couple months ago, there isn't much to worry about losing.
Bloody computers! :mad:Saving and spending in equal measure0
