Ebay - What should I do?

Hi, I am new to posting here. Am looking for a bit of advice please.

I sold an item on ebay last Thursday and have been waiting for the winning bidder to pay. I logged on this morning to find a message from the person saying:

"Hey pls can you retract the sale because my little cousin was the one that placed the bid without my knowledge and i just found out"

I have only been selling for a couple of months and have had non paying bidders but never had this situation. I am really annoyed (they didn't even say sorry!!) but am worried that if I open a NPB dispute they will give me negative feedback. Should I contact the buyer or just open a dispute? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

All you can do is wait until day 4 and then open a full NPB, if buyer doesn't pay and doesn't respond they can't leave you feedback. If they do pay send the goods tracked and if they don't just give them a strike.

2 strikes and they are unlikely to be able to pull this stunt on any other seller as most of us would have them blocked automatically.

Gosh, are non-paying bidders still using those little white lies about little children allegedly placing bids on eBay? :)

Thanks for the advice. So do you think I should reply to the buyer to say that no I won't retract the sale or just leave it and open a NPB? (I can open the NPB tonight).
  • I would open the NPB case and also send an email to the NPB as follows:

"Hello and thank you for your message. eBay has already billed me for the selling fees for this item and regrettably makes no allowances for little cousins placing bids in error.

In order to recoup the selling fees, I have submitted a non-paying bidder case, which will involve eBay asking you to pay for the item, under threat of a non-paying bidder strike.

You (or your little cousin) may wish to appeal against this. As long as either the item is paid for or my seeling fees are reimbursed, I will be happy.

You should also be aware that if your little cousin manages to win a second auction and fails to pay for the item, eBay are likely to prevent your little cousin from bidding by suspending your account."

    Kind regards, :kisses3:

You cannot retract the bid, I thought you said the auction finished last Thursday?

Assuming this is an ended listing you have paid FVFs and need to reclaim those, hence the NPB. There is a mutual option, but that relies on the buyer to assist you by agrreing and basically if a buyer is stupid enough to stay logged in and allow someone to mis use his account then he is too stupid to be trusted with a mutual.

Pesonally I would email back and say that a bid cannot be retracted after auciton ends. Then leave it at that, open an NPB on day 4 and if buyer asks you why blame it on ebay doing it automatically as happens if you have signed up for that programme thingy (the name escapes me).

  • That is tempting to send, but doesn't antagonising the NPB risk them begrudgingly paying then turning into a nightmare buyer? Better to hope an NPB with no further contact slips through unnoticed by them?

I tend to just say something along the lines of, yes I am happy to cancel the sale, but I need to open an unpaid item case in order to get my fees refunded from ebay, I am sure you will understand. The times I have used this the buyers have been TSFE and just said "oh ok then" in an ebay message and not responded to the dispute.

That's roughly what I do, but i usually bung in the unpaid case first..and then play inoccent. I never antagonise a buyer, I always hope they are daft enough to not pay attention to the dispute and allow me to close it before they respond.

I've given a cancellation request rather than an NPB before now, but the buyer had a better reason.

"The cat bid on it"/child in this case is the oldest excuse in the book.

There was once where an item went for opening bid, and the person who won it got in with this message quickly, and I was honestly relieved I didn't have to sell it to them, but...I still did the dispute.
