Wet Footwell

I've had problems with this for a couple of years on my Focus. The passenger footwell gets wet under the car mat. Took it to Fords and they blamed the pollen filter I think it was!

Changed it. Happened again 6 months or so later. They changed it again. It happened again 6 months or so later. Then they changed the seal around the window or the bit between the bonnet or window, not sure. Anyway, alls been well for a while again but now it's getting wet down there again!

Any ideas what it could be? Is it something to do with the AC?

  • This is very common on the Focus, its the cover on the pollen filter, it distorts and doesnt seal correctly. You could buy a new cover (about a tenner) and make sure it seals properly and make sure the clips are correctly fitted. I think Ford issued a recall on these a few years ago about how to reseal the cover to stop this problem.

The pollen filter rings a bell!

Where should one be looking under the bonnet for this filter thingy? :rotfl:

And as is usual with manufacturers, they won't tell you so it doesn't cost them anything.

  • Northern Munkey is correct, this was a problem on the 'old shape' Focus (you didn't specifiy if your model is the old shape but if you've had the problem for 2 yrs then it must be) I'd guess your car is 3-6 yrs old? Whenever you buy an older car always ask to see evidence that any re-call work has been done....the problem is often the plastic panel above the pollen filter, which if damaged during the bonnet being put up at any point, or any work under the bonnet accidentally dislodging the clips that hold the panel in place, then the waterproofing effect of that plastic panel disappear. It is simple to fix and there's been masses on the internet on various forums about it over the years, relating to the old Focus model...and it's nothing compared to some of the 'leaking bucket' problems we've seen in other brands over the years!

It does not affect the current, new shape, Focus. It was often a case of just 2 clips becoming dislodged or the panel moving out of its locked position, nothing major...but the effects of it being disengaged were clearly huge if it rained and the panel had not been put back into position in the older cars.

    Hi. :D

Yeah it's 4 years old and I've had it since new. Obviously it's now out of it's warranty. They have replaced it twice before which concerns me that it is going to be a regular occurence!

If they knew of their fault do I have any grounds for it to be properly fixed as they didn't when they should have without me having to fork out for it?
  • i would imagine that if you brought the fault to their attention during the warranty period but they didn't actually "fix" it then thay should still do it free. d@mn sure i wouldn't pay, especially if its a known fault!

(ps, i'm not stalking you - promise! :p)

i insisted my local ford garage did it for free, at first they denied the problem but i got the part number for the 'new improved' shaped pollen filter cover off a Focus forum and when i looked as though i knew what i was talking about they relented ;)

You don't happen to have the number do you? ;)

Mines a 52 plate! I assume it's the same part?

mine is the Mk1 (indicators separate from light on front bumper) 51 plate, the problem is with this earlier model. Unfortunately I've not got the part number, i originally got it off the FFOC forum, this has now been made a pay site so i can no longer access it, sorry
