Recording BBC red button programmes

Is it possible?

Using Sky

Comments

  • Basically, no.

It has to be something on the EPG before you can record.

Why can't you record them by connecting an external recorder to either the output from the Sky box, or from the TV that's in use?

Essentially, if you can watch them, you can record them...?

By record, I of course meant when I am in bed getting my much needed beauty sleep.

For instance the F1 motor racing practice next month is from Japan & Korea and is on the Red Button in the early hours. Some of the Commonwealth games ditto.

The Sky programme guide doesn't show what is available on the red button, so selecting BBC to record will just record what is showing on BBC - not the Red Button

Even if you are watching a Red Button programme, and attempt to record on the Sky+ or Sky HD box it won't record.

If you select the prog and press Red before going to bed, will it stay on the red programmes perpetually, or does it return to normal programming between programmes?

If the former, then connecting an external recorder should work, shouldn't it ...?
  • I suppose it'd be possible if you put some sort of external recorder onto one of the RF outputs, but you can't record it on the Sky box.

Buy a satellite card for your PC and you'll be able to record all 6 red button changes using software like DVBViewer

    No.

The Red button gives you multiple choices and for instance it might be showing, say, snooker until 11pm and then there is nothing. The F1 coverage will start at, say, 2 am on one of the channels.

However I have tried recording a Red button programme(with Sky+ and Sky HD) whilst it was actually playing(so my son could watch it later) and it won't allow it to be recorded. It displays the 'error message'

'Recording not available on an interactive programme'
  • Try Freeview instead - it's the channels from 301 upwards

Yes, you can get the channel number off the EPG as it's being broadcast. Unfortunately the BBC don't publish it in advance.
