Fair enough, it's your choice, but don't give London visitors the impression that minicabs are illegal, unregistered and uninsured. They are NOT. You seem to be misinformed about what minicabs are and how they are regulated.

And wasn't this guy a black cab driver?Booking your minicab guarantees that your trip will be carried out by a licensed driver in a licensed vehicle. It also means a record is kept of your journey so, in the event of any problem, the driver can be traced.
Even drivers in minicabs lined up outside pubs and clubs are breaking the law if they accept your fare without a prior booking. You must not approach minicab drivers and any minicab driver who approaches you on the street anywhere is acting illegally.

There really is no need for anyone to use taxis in London at all. We have one of the best and comprehensive public transport networks in the world, and despite those of us who live here complaining about the odd delay or having to stand, it really is second to none.
In six years of living in London, I've used a taxi three times. All of them taking a girl home, after I got the impression she wouldn't have come back had I said "let's get a night bus".
Ban taxis! At £50 a pop from zone 1 to the suburbs, it's clear most taxi drivers could retire now quite comfortably!0 -

Unless you are disabled of course, try those trips in a wheelchair next time as an experiment.
I am having some success in the suburbs using this firm, but to get the best quotes you probably need to enquire at least 24hrs in advance. You do need to join up though, although it is worth the effort if you use say one taxi a month.
Can anyone recommend any other sites like this?0
