Which Central Heating System?

I've got a 3 bed semi, 2 young children, a limited budget and desparately need a new central heating system. I won't be fitting it myself so will be calling someone in - but first I'd like to have some sort of idea of what sort of system I want.

I don't have mains gas, currently using LPG. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Someone has mentioned electric central heating is now worth looking at. Is it?

Electric? yes but only if it is a heat pump, an electric boiler would put you in debt forever!!
You have to consider what its going to cost you over a five year period, i.e. capital cost of new boiler / heat pump agaist running costs.
    e.g
new LPG boiler cost £1,500 fitted? + annual running cost £950/yr = £6,250 year 6 £7,200.......+ service contract?
    Heat pump cost £4,500 fitted? + annual running cost £300/yr = £6,000 year 6 £6,300........no service necessary.
There are three types of people in this world...those that can count ...and those that can't! ;)

  • Thanks Albyota. I don't know know much at all about electric pumps but will do some research.

I've had a quote for a new LPG boiler and 10 rads, which totals £4500 - will get more quotes before I go ahead - so I'm hoping those figures you quoted were just random ones to get me to thinking about running costs as well (& thanks, I will).

I just wanted to find out about other sorts of heating rather than just opting for what I've always had.
